More Russians Participating in WCOOP than any other Nationality

September 12, 2011

PokerStars’ World Championship of Online Poker, also known as WCOOP, is in full swing and over half way over. Since the tournament series began on September 4th, the action has been high. Due to the absence of US players at the tables, there has been a major trend in British players sweeping the series. First, event #2 $10,000 NLH High Roller event got down to two players from the UK facing off, with “DYBYDX” winning in the end against “xraypies.” DYBYDX took the $430K prize. Xraypies took the second place seat with a $310K payout, which is a pretty decent come up considering he satelilted in for only $33.

The next title taken by the UK was event #5 $320 NLH 6-Max Shootout. In the end, a six-way split of the payout landed Britain’s “Mossop7” with a $50K+ payout and first place title.

A third WCOOP win for the UK came in event #12 $215 NLH Heads Up. UK player “ricky” took the title and a $75K+ prize. And yet another title came to England in event #13 $215 PLO H/L 6-Max, and another deal was made. The last four players split the prize with “Pandochat” taking $28K+ and third-place Brit “Tick777” taking $32K, the two largest amounts.

The UK isn’t the only European country dominating the WCOOP though this year. With four wins, they are in the lead, but Russia has three, and Norway, the Netherlands, and Australia all have two. Twenty-three Russians have made final tables-the most of any other country and have the most cases at 747. And there have been more Russians registered at WCOOP events than any other nationality thus far.  Russian players “K_0_S_T_A_Y”, “ranayr,” and “Tat0chka” took first place in events #3, #7, and #14, respectively.

Lock Poker Butts Heads with Malta Gaming Commission

September 6, 2011

More troubles for Lock Poker have surfaced. This time regarding the Malta Gambling Commission. Apparently Lock Poker has been displaying the Malta Gambling Commission seal of approval on their website, which is specifically for sites that are regulated and licensed in Malta. According to Malta Gambling Authorities, they have never been associated with Lock Poker, and therefore, they should not be displaying the logo anywhere on their site.

There has been no gambling license issued to Lock Poker from Malta’s gaming commission, which they have declared via a statement issued on their website. The statement explains that the LGA of Malta is notifying the public that they are in no way whatsoever affiliate with the Lock Poker online poker site, and they have not earned the Malta Gambling Commission seal of approval.

Furthermore, the LGA urges online players not to visit non-regulated or non-licensed sites that do not display the logo, for only the ones that have rightfully earned the LGA logo seal are trustworthy sites.

The LGA of Malta issues four different types of gambling licenses to online gaming sites. Three of them are for those gambling sites with operators providing software solutions to host services and player management. A category four license has nothing to do with managing players, which is what the Merge Gaming Network holds, which is affiliated with Lock Poker.

Lock Poker however is currently licensed by the Kahnawake Gaming Commission of Canada. Other online gambling sites on the Merge Network such as Black Chip Poker, Hero Poker, and Overbet Poker all display the Malta seal and have had no objections from the Malta Gaming Commission. So the question remains, what do they have against Lock Poker specifically?

The only speculation is a rumor that it is to do with a public altercation that the Malta Gaming Commission had with Jose Girah, who is associated with Lock Poker, but again, this is only a rumor.

Gambling Market in Macau Booming

September 6, 2011

Macau, one of the two special administrative regions of China (along with Hong Kong), relies heavily on gambling and tourism to support their economy. In fact, the gaming industry in Macau is growing at such an extraordinary rate, that it is quickly becoming one of the biggest gambling markets in the world. According to MGM China, Macau is “the strongest gaming market in the world.”

This former Portuguese colony saw its gross domestic product rise by 26.4% in the past year alone, according to the Casino Times. In addition, the latest survey has indicated that gaming revenue rose 44% just in the first half of 2011. This means that the gambling profits for Macau have quadrupled those of Las Vegas.

Galaxy Macau is the newest force to come along lately and has created 8,000 jobs for people in the area. Galaxy Macau consists of 2,200 rooms and houses a 39,000-square-meter gaming floor, and a rooftop beach!

As a result, just as Vegas grew fairly quickly in its glory days, new casino properties are popping up all over Macau, which lies on the western side of the Pearl River Delta and borders the Guangdong province to the north. To the east and south, Macau faces the South China Sea.

With the plight of professional online poker players still looming heavy over head, there may be a migration trend for these pros from the US to Macau in the future. And according to the World FactBook, Macau has the highest life expectancy in the world. Who says you can’t play poker forever?!

British Poker Awards Names Sam Trickett Best Cash Player

September 6, 2011

Titan Poker’s Sam Trickett was announced the “Best Cash Player” at this year’s British Poker Awards. Trickett received his title at the Poker in the Park festival in London’s Hanover Square this past weekend. This is Trickett’s second British Poker Award, as he won “Best New Player” at the inaugural British Poker Awards last year.

Seeing that Trickett is sponsored by the leading online poker room in Europe, Titan Poker, it’s not that surprising that his fans voted for his success. He was nominated in three different categories, and winners were chosen by online voting. Other nominations Trickett received were “Best Social Media User” and “Best Tournament Player.”

Trickett most likely took the title for “Best Cash Player” after his cash game play became very publicized over the past few months as he participated in quite a few high stakes cash games in Macau and was very successful. He also won the Aussie Millions $100K Challenge this year and took second place in the Aussie Millions $250K Super High Roller event.

Fellow Team Titan member Marvin Rettenmaier from Germany and Trickett will compete in Titan Poker’s sixth anniversary festivities this month, joining online poker players at tournaments and cash games throughout September via the Sam & Marvin’s Playground promotion.

Trickett and Rettenmaier will play on behalf of and represent Titan Poker at the largest poker tournaments in the world, so look for these names to appear again and again in the headlines. Congratulations to Sam Trickett, British Poker Awards “Best Cash Player.”

August 25, 2011

Everyone is gearing up for the 2011 Poker in the Park to take place next weekend in London. This event is one of Europe’s premier poker festivals, and now CalvinAyre.com is confirmed as the official media sponsor of the festival. Running September 2nd through 3rd, there is a lot of poker action packed into these two days at Hanover Square, around the corner from Oxford Circus. And best of all the festival is free to all who wish to attend.

This will be the fifth annual installment of Poker in the Park and coordinators expect at least 20,000 poker people to attend to see what’s new and experience the “new set up.”

Covering the festival will be CalvinAyre.com’s newest poker correspondent, Tatjana Pasalic, part of the tablog team.

One new feature for this year’s Poker in the Park is the Main Stage where live music, magicians, and lots of other entertainment will perform. The British Poker Awards will also take place at the festival and tons of celebrity poker players will be playing poker, fraternizing with fans, and even signing autographs.

Free poker tourneys will start every hour, and sit and gos will be held within poker domes in the area all weekend. Perhaps the most talked about attraction is the Poker Pro Lecture where poker pros will tell some of their secrets to winning at the felt. Find more info at Pokerinthepark.com.

Justin Bonomo to Move to Malta

August 22, 2011

After many online poker pros who otherwise made their living playing online poker have been stripped of their income following Black Friday, many have had no other choice but to flee the country in search of a new home where they can base their business and once again make a living.

Now we can add the following names to the list of US citizens who had to leave the country to find work: Phil Galfond, Mike Brooks, Vanessa Selbst, and Jon Agular. Now Dan “jungleman12” Cates and Haseeb Qureshi have also left the country since the recent cheating scandal they’ve been involved in. Perhaps they will get new identities, new screen names, and maybe even some plastic surgery, so that they can play poker again.

Meanwhile, Justin Bonomo has recently announced via Facebook that he too will be leaving the country, though unlike others who have fled to the UK or Canada, Bonomo will be going to the Meditteranean, about 70 miles south of Italy to a tiny island called Malta, which you may have heard of, as there are quite a few online poker rooms based out of this nation. With a population of not even 370,000 and a land area of only about 300 square kilometers, this is one of the most densely populated countries in the world, so it is rather bizarre that this is where Bonomo has chosen to relocate to.

His reasoning for choosing Malta is its accessibility to a variety of European tournaments and the convenience of setting up new residency. He may have also chosen Malta because of the low taxes.

Bonomo hopes to be in his new Maltan home by September 20th, just in time for the WPT event that will take place there. In the meantime, he’ll be getting rid of his apartment and furniture in Las Vegas, and possibly his 2009 Infiniti G37, which Eric Mizrachi has already expressed interest in purchasing.

Daniel Negreanu’s New Girlfriend: Miss Earth Hungary

August 22, 2011

Daniel Negreanu confirmed in a Quadjacks interview recently that KidPoker has a new girlfriend, who just happens to be “Miss Earth Hungary 2008,” which squashes rumors that were jokingly made by Matt Savage and Mike Matusow that Negreanu was gay.

In the interview, Negreanu stated (without leaving any of her credentials out), “I met my new girlfriend at the World Series. She plays poker too. She just came up; she was just saying ‘Hi’ cause she knew some friends and stuff. So, we just started, you know, hitting it off, and she’s super cool. She lives in Budapest, Hungary. She was Miss Earth Hungary in 2008. She’s there now, but I’m gonna go visit in a bit.”

Her name is Krisztina Polgár. Her ex-boyfriend actually introduced her to poker, Hungarian PokerStars pro Richard Toth, but it is likely that her current boyfriend will really show her how to play.

Negreanu is apparently no longer with Amanda Leatherman, his former girlfriend, who he couldn’t seem to get enough nor could he refrain from dropping her name every time he had the opportunity. Perhaps there’s a sort of pattern here and maybe poker isn’t the only game Negreanu plays. Her pic below…

Liv Boeree, Team PokerStars Pro, says, “I’m so excited that the EPT London Festival of Poker is just around the corner. It will mark a year since I joined Team PokerStars Pro and it was one of the best series of poker tournaments I’ve played in.”

The EPT London will take place at the Hilton London Metropole, the same venue as the past two years. Cash games will run at the nearby Grosvenor Victoria Casino. Players are able to buy in directly online at PokerStars for all events or in person at the casino.

Vic Casino General Manager, Martin Ramskill, says, “We are all looking forward to another fabulous EPT London in conjunction with the Grosvenor Victoria Casino. As always we welcome all players to the 24/7 cash games in the Vic Poker Room. Courtesy cars will run between venues continuously for players’ convenience.”

To qualify, go to PokerStars and join the online satellites running now for the £5,250 Main Event, which is expected to be the richest poker tournament the UK has ever seen. Last year’s prize pool was worth £4,112,800 thanks to 848 contributing players, one of which, David Vamplew, a student from Scotland, won first place and £900,000.

The Festival of Poker will also feature the €10,000 EPT Country of the Year Freeroll. In Season 7, Ireland won the award for gaining the highest percentage of cashes. Thus, all 38 players from Ireland who competed in the Main Event of Season 7 will be invited to return for Season 8.

The EPT London Main Event will be televised.
