The Top 10 Poker Players in the World According to ESPN
February 10, 2010
Every month the American sports site ESPN.com is rating who they think are the top 10 poker players at that moment, this ranking list is called “The Nuts”. The fact that Phil Ivey is topping the list comes as no surprise to anyone that knows poker. That Phil Ivey is dominating this list becomes very clear when reading the following statement from ESPN’s poker writer, Andrew Feldman. “I wonder what kind of month the other players need to have in order to be able to take Ivey of the first place on this list”.
In second place we find Patrik Antonius, even though he has suffered some huge losses the last couple of weeks. “Still one of the best players in the world with a constant presence at the high stakes tables”, was the motivation for the second place listing.
The third spot, or the second runner up if you prefer that is also a bit more unexpected. The third place listing was given to Jason Mercier who is really starting to show some results at the poker tables lately. Two final tables during the WPT Southern Championships probably contributed towards his place on the list.
There are two other surprising things on this top 10 list. The first one is that Tom “Durrrr” Dwan is fa down the list, in 8th place actually. The other big surprise is that Daniel Alaei is in front of him with his 7th place on this top 10 list.
ESPN goes on to refer to Daniel Alaei as the most underestimated player on the whole list. He is a very skilled cash-game player and the WPT victory in the Doyle Brunson Five Diamond Poker Classic during December last year probably helped him a lot. But to the equation we also have to add two WSOP bracelets and $4.000.000 in life time tournament winnings.
As always with these types of top 10 lists it is the live tournament results that is the biggest factor.
Below is the complete top 10 list:
- Phil Ivey
- Patrik Antonius
- Jason Mercier
- Daniel Negreanu
- Eric Baldwin
- Yevgeniy Timoshenko
- Daniel Alaei
- Tom Dwan
- Bertrand Grosspellier
- Jeff Lisandro
At the ESPN website they also mention some players that are close to making the list but didn’t quite make it this month. These players are Cole South, Jeff Madsen, Dan Shak, Anette Obrestad and Ty Reiman.
Ladbrokes Security Leak
February 5, 2010
Ladbrokes players, beware that a “limited amount” of customer data of players has been stolen from the British bookmaker. A UK newspaper reported last weekend that the paper had been approached to purchase the contact details of 10,000 Ladbrokes members, as well as access to their database that encompasses the private information of 4.5 million worldwide.
The paper, the Daily Mail, also reported that the info consisted of the home addresses, gambling history details, account numbers, telephone numbers, and email addresses of Ladbrokes customers.
Ladbrokes retaliated with a service message that followed the report: “This message is to inform our customers that Ladbrokes has been victim to the theft of a limited amount of customer data. We would like to make it clear that no customer banking details or Ladbrokes account log-in details have been compromised in any way.
“We are aware that an individual has offered certain details from a customer database to a national newspaper. This is a criminal act and we are working with the police, the Information Commissioner’s Office, and the newspaper to identify and apprehend the culprit.”
Ladbrokes was notified by the Daily Mail to the solicitation that was reportedly made by a “mysterious Australian.” This phony salesman went by the name of Daniel and claimed to be rep from a Melbourne-based company, DSS Enterprises, provider of IT services to Ladbrokes from 2007 through 2008.
Ladbrokes is now in full damage control mode trying to get the word out that no credit card data was included in the stolen data.
Whether or not this guy has made a legitimate sale of the info to some other business who wasn’t so honest as the Daily Mail or if he has been scared off now by all the buzz is unknown. Ladbrokes is working to retrieve the security of the data and apprehend the perpetrator. They have not announced any ideas as to who may be behind the scam.
SEGA Poker and Casino in Planning
February 4, 2010
Entering into the online gambling industry is video gaming company, SEGA. While many didn’t see this coming, the virtual online poker room and casino by SEGA is now a reality. Just recently coming into this industry, which can be difficult by itself, SEGA has a loyal fan base to follow them and quite a bit of experience under its belt in the genre of gaming in general.
This is the first time a gaming company like SEGA has made such a venture, so it’s a novel concept, but no doubt a great idea. While most every online gambling site has a theme, the SEGA poker room and casino identity will already be incorporated into the brand. Home console/computer gaming is a booming business already; couple that with the mind boggling industry of online gambling, and they most certainly will have a winner despite the fierce competition that the industry maintains.
As a leader in the forefront of gaming development for decades, this innovative company is expected to take a creative approach to the business and hopefully bring something new to the table. With SEGA’s reputation of bringing cutting edge graphics to their gaming, players can look forward to seeing some of their iconic characters like Sonic the Hedgehog showing up in slot games and elsewhere.
SEGA is still in the minds of many, and it has been to the disappointment of fans that they haven’t moved forward with the brand thus far, making their reemergence all the more exciting for diehard fans out there. It is also speculated that other gaming companies may follow the successful lead of SEGA such as Nintendo and Sony Playstation. This announcement puts a glimmer of hope in the eye of the industry, as players are bound to demand something new eventually. Hopefully it won’t be the same old status quo when the SEGA online gambling sites launch.
Phil Laak Launches Unabomber.com on Cake Network
January 29, 2010
As the Cake Poker Network is growing in popularity they are getting more and more people to open online poker rooms on their network. Just recently they got an addition of 8 new poker rooms that joined the network.
Below is a list of the 8 new poker rooms that have decided to join the Cake Network:
7WinPoker, RedBackPoker, AmsterdamsPoker, SafariCasino, R2RPoker, BurroPoker, DimeLineSports and UnaBomberPoker.
The most interesting addition out of these 8 sites must be UnabomberPoker.com that is owned by no other than high stakes gambler Phil “Unabomber” Laak. Phil is going to be a regular at the poker tables at UnabomberPoker and he is also going to post on his blog on the site. What makes UnabomberPoker.com unique on the Cake Network is that their players will be able to win special prizes, one of them being a place in one of Phil Laak’s private homegames.
We knew that we wanted to create the sickest poker site on the planet. By joining a network who reward their players and accept players from all over the world we knew we were heading in the right direction. I love the fact that I’m on this project from the start and I am regularly blogging at UnabomberPoker.com/blog, said Laak.
T.J. Cloutier’s WSOP Bracelet Sold to Cake Poker
January 28, 2010
Last week we wrote the story about T.J. Cloutier selling one of his WSOP bracelets on eBay. Now the auction have come to an end and the new owner of the bracelet is the Cake Poker Network who won the auction after placing the winning bid of $4006.
It is still not known what the Cake Poker Network are planning to do with this bracelet but it’s probably not too far fetched to believe that they are planning to have some special promotions coming up involving this bracelet.
It will be interesting to see if T.J. Cloutier will be putting up some more items of his for sale anytime soon since the $4006 probably doesn’t last very long for a Craps degenerate.
Holdem Manager Updated to Support Rush Poker
January 26, 2010
After a week of long working hours the programming team behind the online poker tool Holdem Manager have managed to work out an update that will make their software compatible with the Rush Poker tables at Full Tilt Poker. Instead of using a heads-up display the players will now be getting their stats sent to their players notes when playing Rush Poker.
With the new poker variant Rush Poker at Full Tilt there are new tables and players all the time and you can play as many as 300 hands per hour and table. At the launch of Rush Poker there were no poker tools that were compatible with this type of poker, until now that is.
The Holdem Manager team are the first ones to present a poker tracking software that is compatible with Rush Poker.
“Due to the structure of Full Tilt Poker’s Rush Poker tables we have not been able to get the stats to the players using a traditional heads-up display. Instead we have designed a tool that will send the database with the statistics directly to the players player notes”.
If you have not yet tried out the phenomenon that is Rush Poker then we suggest you head on over to Full Tilt Poker and try it out. And don’t forget to enter the Full Tilt referral code PRULESNET when you sign up as it will give you a 100% bonus up to $600.

Comeback for Phil Hellmuth?
January 22, 2010
Last week, PartyPoker and Matchroom Sport announced that 11-bracelet WSOP winner, Phil Hellmuth, has signed up for PartyPoker’s Premier League IV in Las Vegas, Nevada. The main event will take place February 12th through 18th, 2010. Alongside Hellmuth will be Yevgeniy Timoshenko and defending champ, JC Tran.
Hellmuth says of the event, “I am looking forward to playing in the Premier League and starting the new decade off on the right note! After being points leader in the Premier League in 2006, 2007, and 2008 I was relegated, and it is time to step up and claim a title!”
Sixteen lucky players who qualified for a chance to play in the league will participate in a preliminary Premier League Poker playoff, and one of these players will advance to compete against the 11 professional poker players the main event. These playoffs will consist of a short series of sit & go’s with the winner receiving the $100K buy-in to the Premier League IV event. Both preliminary and main events will be aired on television. In addition, one of the 16 qualifying players will be selected by PartyPoker to receive a $100K Team Party contract. To qualify via a country-specific qualifier, check in the specials tab of the PartyPoker lobby.
The PartyPoker’s Premier League III champion was JC Tran, considered one of the world’s finest tournament players in the poker circuit. He took home $300K as a result of his win after he and 11 other of the world’s best poker players battled it out for the $1.25 million prize pool. Other final table players from last year included Peter Eastgate, Roland de Wolfe, Juha Helppi, Tony G, and Tom “durrrr” Dwan. This year, the prize pool will reach an unprecedented $1.5 million. Perhaps Hellmuth will start the decade off right and make a comeback from his less- than-average performance of 2009.
Other former Premier League champs include Andy Black (Premier League II) and Juha Helppi (Premier League I).

January 21, 2010
To own a WSOP bracelet is probably the biggest dream of every self respecting poker player out there. But to get one you will usually have to win one of the WSOP events which is not a simply task. But now there is another alternative out there for those of you who thinking of buying a new bracelet anyway.
