PartyGaming Buys WPT

August 26, 2009

Peerless Media, a PartyGaming company, have bought the WPT brand. They managed to do this even though it had already been sold to another company, but that deal was cancelled after PartyGaming made their offer. The World Poker Tour was sold for the sum of $12.3 million plus 5% of the income that is being generated from now on.

PartyGaming, owner of PartyPoker.com, managed to buy the WPT brand even though Gaymynia Ltd, a private investment group earlier bought the WPT for $9 million. But that deal was cancelled as mentioned earlier in this article.

“PartyGaming has been a very important partner for several years and we are convinced that they are going to take good care of our brands in the future”, said Steve Lipscomb.

Since the poker boom in 2003 the WPT brand has been growing steadily but over the last year the interest for the tour have cooled off significantly. The WPT Legends of Poker which is being played right now have 25% less participants when compared to last year.

Phil Ivey stands to win $30 Million from 2009 WSOP Main Event Win

July 31, 2009

Since Phil Ivey made it to the final table of the 2009 WSOP Main Event the rumours about his side bet action have started to spread. Several sources have been saying that Phil have been placing large sums of money on himself as the WSOP Main Event winner 2009.

It has been confirmed that Andy Bloch and Phil Gordon stand to lose millions of dollars if Ivey should manage to win the tournament once it resumes in August. The first prize for winning the WSOP Main event this year is $8.5 million but that is mere peanuts compared to what he stands to win in the several prop bets that he has going on at the side.

Ivey have already won two bracelets this year and according to recent rumours he have $12 million from these events just from the side bets with other poker pro’s and degenerate gamblers.

Should Phil Ivey manage to take down the first prize in Novermber he will also get $8.5 win bonus from Full Tilt Poker for his sponsor deal with the online poker room. If all of these rumours turn out to be true it looks as if Phil stands to win a bit over $30 million for taking the Main Event bracelet.

It’s not very strange that a player like Phil Ivey has a lot of trust in his own abilities at the poker tables as he has managed to finish in the top 40 players 4 out of his last 8 tries. His best finish in the WSOP Main Event came in 2003 when he finished in 10th place, just missing the final table.

The success have been plenty in the other WSOP events as well and Ivey now has a total of 7 bracelets in his collection. On top of this he is also one of the most successful players on the World Poker Tour, with one titel win and and seven final tables. He was also very close to taking down a victory on the European Poker Tour when he finished second in EPT Barcelona. The year before that he managed to win the Monte Carlo Millions, which at the time had a first prize of $1.000.000.

Ivey’s total tournament winnings are now up to $10.8 million and that is before adding the $1.26 million that he is guaranteed to win in the 2009 World Series of Poker Main Event.

The thing that makes Phil Ivey unique is that he is also one of the biggest winner at the cash game tables both online and in the land based casinos. Since the beginning of 2007 he is a $10 million winner at Full Tilt Poker, where he can be found playing at the high stakes tables “Ivey Deathmatch” and “Ivey Thunderdome“. Ivey is also a frequent visitor at the high stakes tables at the Bellagio in Las Vegas where they are playing “The Big Game“.

Phil Ivey managed to make quite a name for himself in the poker world when he beat billionaire Andy Beal during a three day session which meant a nice payday for the members of “The Corporation“. The Corporation at the time consisted of Doyle Brunson, Chip Reese, Todd Brunson, Ted Forrest, Jennifer Harman, Howard Lederer, Gus Hansen, Barry Greenstein and Chau Giang amongst other players.

When taking all of these things into consideration most of us probably believe that Phil Ivey will manage to win the 2009 WSOP Main Event even though he is way behind the chipleader Darvin Moon.

Expected French poker tax changes finally taking place

July 30, 2009

Latest poker news is that the French government has decided not to go ahead with the online poker tax plans. These plans would have seen the tax player stakes increase at 2%. This news came as a relief for the C.E.O of the top poker brand ChiliPoker, a France-focused online poker industry who will benefit as they market the French market.

It was the French authorities who changed the taxation set up last week stating that online poker from 2% of player stakes to 2% of the pots, capped at €1. The poker community and industry in general had asked the French government to change its plans again and again. Their point of argument was that that proposed regulation would make legal poker sites completely uncompetitive and unfair.

Alexandre Dreyfus, chief executive of ChiliPoker expressed his relief after hearing the government decision while interviewed by EGRmagazine.com, saying that “We are all very glad that we were consulted by the French government and that our views were taken seriously. Although the set up is not ideal – we want to be able to offer French players the possibility to play against players from other countries, especially for tournament games – the hope is that legislation will evolve with time.”

30% of all the pots generated by the online operators are estimated to be the French government’s total tax take on all this as the revised system will allow more freedom on the market. It will allow for online poker operators to offer a more competitive environment to their customers and at the same time grow the game in France.

It was also noted that EGBA / The European Gaming and Betting Association described the French government’s plan as “highly problematic” as they would make operators pay sport federations for the right to offer markets on their events. France is consolidating and introducing the sports betting right as part of the draft gambling regulation that will be implemented in France next year in an aim to “preserve the integrity of sports”.
