Closing ‘Dusk till Dawn’ poker room?
June 3, 2009
The latest news comes from the business media in Nottingham, England with alleged reports that Rob Yong’s live poker room in the city “Dusk till Dawn” is very probable to be shutting its doors in less than two weeks’ time. The club had opened its doors in late 2007, which is less than two years ago. At the time it was the first legal poker-only club as it had obtained a casino licence even though majorly opposed by the UK gambling groups. Amongst this strong opposition were Stanley’s, Gala and Grosvenor who seemed to fear that such a move would mean further growth in more poker-only clubs.
Now, the club’s shutdown would mean a 100 people and over sudden redundancy. “It’s very saddening after all the hard work that myself and my staff have put into the club but it’s highly likely we’ll be closing” were the words quoted by Yong.
Nowadays, the problems experienced by Dusk till Dawn are that even though their licence is classified as a full casino licence, it does not offer table games such as blackjack and roulette. Thus, the club cannot claim back the VAT due on its GBP 3.4 million refurbishment costs. They are also subject to new gaming duty laws which they never accounted for.
This closure would be a big loss for Rob Yong. No one yet knows how this loss will affect his other assets and operations such as Yong’s DTDpoker.com and DTDcasinos.com online interests. These operations are powered by Cryptologic Internet venues and licensed in Malta while operated through an intermediary agreement with MCP Entertainment Ltd. We will know more this Summer.
Hamann, Former Liverpool/Newcastle Star in big Debts
June 3, 2009
Former Newcastle and Liverpool midfielder Dietmar Hamann is facing £ 600,000 in gambling debts. He is now appearing committed in finally tackling this major debt and insisted that he would escape the horrid possibility of being taken to court.
Now a free agent after his Manchester City contract ran out, Hamann is not in a nice place as spread betting company Sporting Index is searching for legal action after having served the paperwork to the High Court. These documents show a lot of arrears that had been accumulated over the past three years. Sporting Index decided to take action following Hamann’s no-show at the January 3rd hearing deadline to clear the debt. At the moment there are no reports that the german footballer Hamann ever gambled on football matches he might have influenced.
Sporting Index and Hamann are trying to negotiate a compromise that suits both. The footballer, now 35, had reportedly racked up debts of £706,000 by December, and has only repaid £100,000.
Regardless, the latter is positive there will be no court hearing as he stated, ‘We will find a solution. There won’t be any court hearing.’
Tom McEvoy wins WSOP Champions Invitational
June 2, 2009
Team PokerStars member Tom McEvoy managed to outlast 19 other WSOP Main Event champions in the 2009 WSOP Champions Invitational and is now truly the Champion of the Champions. At the final table he had to battle it out against other previous Main Event Champs such as Phil Hellmuth, Doyle Brunson, Carlos Mortensen, Peter Eastgate and Amarillo Slim.
Before this event started we announced that it was likely that Russ Hamilton would participate even though he currently has a whole poker nation against him. At the start of the tournament Mr. Hamilton was nowhere to be found. If that means he is guilty to the charges or not we do not want to speculate in.
In the final heads-up match McEvoy was facing the 2002 Main Event Champion Robert Varkonyi. This heads-up match only lasted for about 30 minutes before McEvoy managed to take the last few chips from Varkonyi.
Since this tournament was a freeroll there was no cash prize to be collected but McEvoy did get a restored 1973 Chevrolet for his efforts. And obviously he gets the bragging rights that comes with beating 19 other Main Event Champions.
Russ Hamilton Might Be Coming to the World Series of Poker
June 2, 2009
The latest addition to the 2009 World Series of Poker event “Table of Champions” is Russ Hamilton, the one time World Series of Poker champion.
Hamilton was reportedly involved in a highly publicized online poker cheating scandal which he also tries to avoid mentioning. Recently, some angry poker players had reported him to the IRS. As recommended by his lawyer of trust, Hamilton refuses to discuss the allegations made against him.
According to Poker legend Doyle Brunson, this grapevine talk will not stop Hamilton from showing up at the WSOP. He comments, “Russ Hamilton is caught between a rock and a hard place. Russ is accused of being the mastermind behind the cheating scandal at UB. The evidence looks like Russ is guilty but I’ve learned to wait for the verdict to be handed down. If Russ shows up, he is going to take lots of abuse from angry poker players, and if he doesn’t show, every will say, “See there, he is admitting he is guilty.” My guess is he will be there.”
The poker pro is reportedly going to take part in this event, making him one of the two controversial participants set to take part in that event. The other interesting and poker big is Amarillo Slim. The last we heard of Amarillo was when he was accused of having engaged in inappropriate behavior with a minor / child molestation but Preston always denied this.
Both Amarillo and Hamilton are set to centre of attention and will draw plenty of scrutiny, especially on Slim due to his media news.

Ziigmund takes down huge pot against Durrrr
June 1, 2009
Over the last couple of weeks it has been Tom “durrrr” Dwan and Ilari “Ziigmund” Sahamies that have been the biggest attraction to watch at the high stakes tables at Full Tilt Poker. The two players have been playing a lot against eachother lately and they have been playing some really huge pots. They have mainly been playing at the Pot Limit Omaha tables which is where the biggest pots are usually played out. They are obviously playing at the highest possible stakes which is $500/$1000 but sometimes these blinds are too small for these players so they added a new stipulation which was a non optinal three bet pre flop which means the blinds end up being $3000/$9000. This new way of playing have obviously contributed towards the huge pots that they have played lately.
A couple of days ago when they were playing with this exact stipulations “Ziigmund” managed to take down a huge pot of $702.000. This pot is the second largest pot ever played at any online poker room. The only pot that is bigger is the $723.938 pot that was won by Urindanger when he played against durrrr.
Hopefully for durrrr he will soon be on the other side of these huge pots, it can’t feel very good to have lost the 2 biggest pots ever played in online poker history.

Poker machine robberies
May 29, 2009
The police force in New Zealand is currently investigating into the involvement of three suspects in a mass of poker machine robberies in the North Island, Hamilton. The three suspected men have been arrested yesterday and placed in jail behind two bars in their locality.
Money was repeatedly stolen from poker machines and the police are now investigating the men’s involvement in another almost 60 poker machine robberies throughout the North Island. This theft has been reported mostly in the Waikato and King Country areas.
The three suspects are Charles Runga, aged 33, Harley Randall, aged 29, and Patrick Marra, aged 24. They all appeared in the New Plymouth District Court yesterday and were sent in custody until the 29th of May.
The Taranaki Daily News has reported that there has been a considerable amount of similar burglaries. This theft has been specifically targeted to the poker machines throughout the North Island in the past three or four years. This information was backed up by a statement of Grant Coward, the New Plymouth Police Detective Senior Sergeant.
Coward followed to say that the three men were “considered suspects” in these robberies, and the police allege that they have hit five bars around New Plymouth in the recent months. Through the investigations, the police have so far recovered a full $1300 in $2 coins.
Addict Harry Kakavas talks about secret listening device
May 29, 2009
News from Kakavas’s $30 million Supreme Court fight with Crown Casino is that of a full ten hours of secret tape recordings, which were handed to Justice David Harper. Kakavas is in the process of suing Crown Casino for the $20.5 million that he lost in a 14-month binge at Baccarat between June 2005 and August 2006, also to include damages incurred.
is also suing Mr Williams who allegedly had devised a plan to get him back with extra cash incentives and use of his own luxury jet. Williams is the son of casino developer Lloyd Williams, and Crown Global CEO Rowen Craigie.
Kakavas had already signed a self-exclusion order which meant he was banned from the casino life-long and had told the court he owed more than $20 million to friends and $4.9 million to the Australian Tax Office before that. The latter said he raised most of his gambling funds when he mortgaged properties owned by his successful Gold Coast real estate business.
Then revelations showed he also owed $5 million to casinos in Las Vegas, $1 million to Crown and $1 million to the Atlantas casino in the Bahamas. He said that the Crown Casino extended his credit to $1 million owed to Crown during his final visit to the casino in 2006. “Mr Williams said to me that the $1 million was no big deal for Crown. He told me not to feel hurried or pressured to pay it back.”
Kakavas’ attorneys have in fact revealed that in late 2006 he wore a hidden listening device during a number of conversations with the Crown chiefs. The tape transcripts were not read to the court after the Crown’s counsel Neil Young, QC objected, saying he requests that the tapes are checked by an independent expert to determine whether they had been “edited, stopped or started”. These tapes reveal separate talks with senior Crown executives John Williams, Howard Aldridge, Richard Doggart and Bill Horman. When asked why he chose to use a recording device, Mr Kakavas said, “I formed the view that Crown would be less than truthful.”
Crown Casino seems to have been given access to the tapes more than a year ago and had never previously raised concerns after having listened to the entire material. The hearing will continue this Tuesday.
