US getting a push from the EU to legalise online gambling

June 17, 2009

News from the EU report has it that the European Union is now interfering and having it s say in the internet gambling dispute with the United States and they are pressing to find a solution. This new EU reports appeared in the same week when the U.S. authorities seized around $30 million from bank accounts believed to be related to online poker and other gambling websites.

This helping hand from the EU is good news for the millions of online gambling amateurs and lovers currently living or residing in the U.S.

The United States are being urged by the European Commission to stop its current ban on the online gambling companies. They are urging them to stop the ban this week, stating that the current online gambling ban was passed during the administration years of Bush and it now violates world trade agreements. The EU is even saying they will step up and seek compensation from the World Trade Organization this time around on this online gambling issue. They claim that this ban made towards foreign gambling websites from operating in the U.S. definitely violates the international trade laws.

The online gambling bill introduced by Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass) was also mentioned as to it legalizing the online gambling industry in the United States. It safeguards clients against illegal activities such as money laundering and others, thus protecting the gamblers.

These talks and negotiations between the U.S. and the European Union will hopefully pave the way to a more sensible legal structure for the online gambling industry around the world.

Simpsons Producer moves poker game to Playboy TV

June 16, 2009

Former Simpsons producer Sam Simon has reportedly said this week that he’s been told that his private poker games should be on television a long time ago due to their high level of entertainment. Finally we will be able to see that in action as he is putting this to the test with “Sam’s Game“.

This show will debut on Playboy TV this Thursday. The filming will be at The Palms casino and resort in Las Vegas. This show is inspired by the many poker nights that Simon himself hosted regularly for his friends. The show promises entertainment and includes Dave Attell, Artie Lange, Norm MacDonald and Jeff Ross and Jennifer Tilly, Simon’s former wife amongst others. 2001 Playmate of the Year and a “Celebrity Apprentice” contestant Brande Roderick will also appear.

Simon stated; “The stakes aren’t the biggest, the players aren’t the best, but the game is definitely the funniest.” Poker professional and champions Jennifer Leigh and Phil Laak will also be joining in the Texas Hold ‘Em games.

The show is self-described as a raunchy type of comedy with unfiltered language. The original idea for the show came from Playboy TV itself which knew about his Simon’s very entertaining and hot private games. Simon confirmed this and stated, “I’ve spent years in development to try to get shows on the air. When a network calls and says, `We want to shoot this’ the answer is Yes”.

Bodog.com is back in action

June 15, 2009

Bodog.com is finally back in action, after having given up their original domain name over two years ago. It has been reported that when Bodog lost their Bodog.com domain name, they ended up losing a lot of significant business. This happened during the much talked about patent suit that was then settled back in April.

Before the said domain seizure, Bodog was dominating the search rankings, and although it was not immediately known how the changeover affected them, they did end up losing most of the rankings very soon after the seizure. In time, BodogLife.com which replaced Bodog.com, did manage to get some rankings back home but definitely not all of them.

Last Wednesday afternoon during the 2009 World Series of Poker, David Williams, announced proudly the official return of the Bodog.com site. Williams is one of Bodog’s only remaining celebrity poker professionals.

Apparently, the company did wait a few weeks after the decision to move back to the original domain but when having a look at the latest statistics, the decision was taken. In fact, Bodog Poker has fallen to the number 15 spot among all online poker rooms in the world with an average of 760 real cash players per week. Let s hope Bodog.com picks up and starts competing with the big fish again.

Poker advertisements banned after being linked with erotic entertainment

June 10, 2009

Swank Poker and their current ongoing campaign has been heavily censured by the Watchdog of the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA). The said campaign has been published in adult magazines promising readers ‘hot action’ if they gamble online. Qouted as ‘the very best in poker action coupled with the finest erotic entertainment that the civilised world has to offer’, the Swank Poker advert made very clear promises.

The link betting gambling and sexual success was made clear in their magazine campaign. Swank Poker featured a woman cupping her breasts under the catchy line “Will you hold this pair for me?“. This advert has now been banned by the ASA ad watchdog for conservative reasons. This campaign promised “hot action” to online gamblers where “your favourite girl will play as you tell her to’’ and it was running through the magazine in an adult title called Flush. In further promotions, through an advertorial Swank Poker has quoted “the very best in poker action coupled with the finest erotic entertainment that the civilised world has to offer”. Readers were told on a separate occasion that the female online poker players featured in the service are “not your alter egos” but “bring enough action to the Swank tables and the next thing you know, she could be taking care of your wildest fantasies”. When it came to rewards and prizes, this included “serious erotic action” and “the opportunity to star in a movie with them”.

Eventually, the Remote Gambling Association (RGA) filed a complaint with the ASA. They complained that the advertisements were linking gambling to the world of erotic seduction and sexual success and it also argued that the adverts were not socially responsible not acceptable. This is especially pertaining when it comes into relation to protecting children, minors and “other vulnerable persons” from these online sexual exploits issued by the named gambling commercial.

On the other hand, Swank Poker has denied all the allegations. The latter counter argued that instead of offering the standard marketing tools such as caps and T-shirts, they decided to offer equal rewards that were legally being sold. The difference is that these alternative goods, happen to be of a very adult nature and not adequate for everyone. Swank Poker says that they clearly advertised that these adult services were for adults only.

Finally, the ASA ruled that the adverts have breached the regular advertising code when linking gambling to sexual connotations. They also noted they should not appear again in future ads. However, they did not favour the second complaint which said the advertisements are targeting the young and vulnerable people since they appeared in a magazine targeting those in the 25- to 40-year-old age group.

Phil Ivey Wins Sixth WSOP Bracelet

June 5, 2009

Yesterday evening it was time for the final table of Event #8 of the 2009 WSOP, which was a Deuce to Seven Draw Lowball No limit event. The poker superstar Phil Ivey was amongst the 7 remaining players that made it to the final table and still had a shot at the bracelet. At that time Ivey was in 6th place but still had a decent stack.

With $106.300 in chips he still had a decent chance to win the tournament and get his sixth WSOP Bracelet.

At the beginning of the final table things were not looking good for Phil Ivey as he quickly saw his stack shrink to $65.000 and he was in last place at that point. But just a couple of hands later the big rush came for Ivey and he won three straight hands against Raphael Zimmerman and turned his $65.000 to $400.000 and was now the chip leader at the table as well as the huge favourite to win the event.

After those three hands everything seemed to go Phil’s way and after beating John Monnette in the final heads-up match he has secured his sixth WSOP title along with the $96.361 first price.

Phil Ivey is now one of the top 10 WSOP players through all times together with players like T.J Cloutier and Men “The Master” Nguyen.

But he still has a long way to go before he can reach the top of that list as Phil Hellmuth currently holds 11 WSOP Bracelets.

Closing ‘Dusk till Dawn’ poker room?

June 3, 2009

The latest news comes from the business media in Nottingham, England with alleged reports that Rob Yong’s live poker room in the city “Dusk till Dawn” is very probable to be shutting its doors in less than two weeks’ time. The club had opened its doors in late 2007, which is less than two years ago. At the time it was the first legal poker-only club as it had obtained a casino licence even though majorly opposed by the UK gambling groups. Amongst this strong opposition were Stanley’s, Gala and Grosvenor who seemed to fear that such a move would mean further growth in more poker-only clubs.

Now, the club’s shutdown would mean a 100 people and over sudden redundancy. “It’s very saddening after all the hard work that myself and my staff have put into the club but it’s highly likely we’ll be closing” were the words quoted by Yong.

Nowadays, the problems experienced by Dusk till Dawn are that even though their licence is classified as a full casino licence, it does not offer table games such as blackjack and roulette. Thus, the club cannot claim back the VAT due on its GBP 3.4 million refurbishment costs. They are also subject to new gaming duty laws which they never accounted for.

This closure would be a big loss for Rob Yong. No one yet knows how this loss will affect his other assets and operations such as Yong’s DTDpoker.com and DTDcasinos.com online interests. These operations are powered by Cryptologic Internet venues and licensed in Malta while operated through an intermediary agreement with MCP Entertainment Ltd. We will know more this Summer.

Hamann, Former Liverpool/Newcastle Star in big Debts

June 3, 2009

Former Newcastle and Liverpool midfielder Dietmar Hamann is facing £ 600,000 in gambling debts. He is now appearing committed in finally tackling this major debt and insisted that he would escape the horrid possibility of being taken to court.

Now a free agent after his Manchester City contract ran out, Hamann is not in a nice place as spread betting company Sporting Index is searching for legal action after having served the paperwork to the High Court. These documents show a lot of arrears that had been accumulated over the past three years. Sporting Index decided to take action following Hamann’s no-show at the January 3rd hearing deadline to clear the debt. At the moment there are no reports that the german footballer Hamann ever gambled on football matches he might have influenced.

Sporting Index and Hamann are trying to negotiate a compromise that suits both. The footballer, now 35, had reportedly racked up debts of £706,000 by December, and has only repaid £100,000.

Regardless, the latter is positive there will be no court hearing as he stated, ‘We will find a solution. There won’t be any court hearing.’
