The British Have Invaded the 2010 WSOP

June 29, 2010

With Brit James Dempsey at the helm, the British have invaded the 2010 WSOP. Having won five bracelets thus far, the United Kingdom is tied with Canada with the most bracelet wins of any other country outside the US during the 2010 World Series of Poker. The five British bracelet winners include Praz Bansi, James Dempsey, Richard Ashby, Mike Ellis, and Steve Jelinek.

Praz Bansi was the first Brit to win first place with the 2010 WSOP $1,500 No Limit Hold’em worth $515k. To date, Bansi has won two WSOP bracelets, has eight cashes, and more than $1.4 million in WSOP earnings.

James Dempsey followed suit winning the 2010 WSOP $1,500 Pot Limit Hold’em worth $197K. Dempsey almost stole the show with another win finishing second place in the $10K Omaha Hi-Lo Split-8 or Better World Championship winning more than $301K. During his professional career, Dempsey has claimed one WSOP bracelet, four cashes, and more than $522k in WSOP earnings.

Richard Ashby joined the British spotlight with his 2010 WSOP win in the $1,500 Seven Card Stud worth a $140K win. He was a major contender in the $10K HORSE World Championship as well, but came away with second place and $378K instead. Quite the cash game specialist, Ashby has nabbed one WSOP bracelet, 11 cashes, and more than $604K in WSOP earnings.

Mike Ellis has had a modestly successful stint so far in the World Series of Poker. He just recently joined the Brit bracelet ranks with a steal of a win in the 2010 WSOP $1,500 No Limit Hold ’em event earning him the coveted gold bracelet and $581K. Ellis has earned one WSOP bracelet, six cashes, and $626K in WSOP earnings since 2008.

Dark horse Steve Jelinek took down a final table that included Phil Hellmuth and John Gottlieb in the 2010 WSOP $1,500 Omaha Hi-Lo Split-8 or Better event. Not only did he take the gold bracelet, but he pocketed a quarter million dollars as well. Jelinek has won one WSOP bracelet, four cashes, and close to $300K in WSOP earnings since 2005.

Other Brits to watch out for during the 2010 World Series of Poker are Neil “Sensei” Channing, Sam Trickett, and Chris Bjorn.

Mizrachi on the Up and Up

June 28, 2010

It was surprising to everyone when the poker world learned that Michael “The Grinder” Mizrachi allegedly owed the tax man an estimated $340,000 in unpaid taxes when his estimated poker winnings to date equate to about $6.7 million. Mizrachi’s financial woes have plagued him and his family for the last several months and flooded the media with the shocking news. Not to worry, however. The Grinder is on the up and up thanks to the 2010 World Series of Poker.

To settle the alleged unpaid income tax bill, Mizrachi reportedly had to sell his Hollywood, Florida home as well as his not-so-humble-abode in Miramar, Florida. Mizrachi claims that poor accounting is to blame for his financial woes. “They were doing a bad job,” he said, “I’m working on settling the liens.”

Not only is he settling the liens, but Mizrachi is living up to his nickname having clenched the first place win at the 2010 WSOP Poker Players Championship in May. At only the second event of the 2010 World Series of Poker, Michael Mizrachi won the gold bracelet and $1.6 million in cash. The best part about the win was he got to play the final table with his brother Robert, and he won his first-ever WSOP bracelet.

Commenting on the big win, Mizrachi’s wife Lily said, “It was such a big deal. It was the only thing he was missing. Winning a WSOP event was his dream, and he came so close last year in pot-limit Omaha, especially since Robert won the year before. He was really discouraged to not win that and keep it in the family.”

Mizrachi went on to win 6th place in the 2010 WSOP 7-card Stud World Championship worth $69,000; 8th place in the Limit Hold ’em World Championship worth $50,000; and a worthy 26th place in a mixed event worth only $6,300. Looks like he can pay his debts now and won’t have to worry anymore.

Dwan Making Waves for a 2010 WSOP Bracelet

June 28, 2010

The bets are on the books and Dwan is playing poker! Rumor has it Tom “Durrrr” Dwan stands to win eight figures from various prop bets if he wins a 2010 WSOP gold bracelet.

At 23 years old, Dwan has already pocketed more than $530K in WSOP cashes since 2008. His first event at the 2008 WSOP landed him 7th place finisher and $67,000 in his pocket. Not a bad start considering the old pros he was playing with and his bright green youth. Five days later, Dwan made waves again finishing 8th in a second event at the 2008 WSOP where he took home an additional $45,000.

As with so many others, Dwan got his start playing poker online, but few have had the success or potential as he. Dwan is the 5th largest winner on Full Tilt Poker.com winning an estimated $3 million, a few dollars shy of famous pros Phil Ivey, David Benyamine, Di “Urindanger” Dang, and Niki “Kaibuxxe” Jedlicka. Dwan now has an estimated poker bankroll nearing the $10 million mark.

Dwan is halfway through the 2010 WSOP, and there’s no stopping Tom “Durrrr” Dwan from aggressively playing each event to win the prized gold bracelet at the final table. He needs to tighten up if he’s going to a bracelet ceremony, however.

Off to a not-so-promising start, 2010 WSOP Event #6 was Dwan’s first event where he landed 35th place and $16,000. His second event, Event #11, found Dwan 2nd place finisher and $381,000. Close, but no cigar. Dwan fell way behind in Event #31 landing 74th place and a measly $2,800.

If Dwan is going to win that coveted bracelet, he’s going to have to step up his game. With the likes of Dwan’s competition, namely Men “the Master” Nguyen, Phil Ivey, Michael Mizrachi, and James Dempsey, winning a 2010 WSOP bracelet isn’t going to be easy. And considering the eight-figure bets at stake, Dwan needs to get his head in the game-fast.

2010 WSOP Ladies Event Turned Co-Ed

June 28, 2010

A 30-year tradition to honor women in poker and encourage more women to play, the Ladies Poker Championship turned co-ed in 2010. About a dozen men cited discrimination, claiming that it’s an unfair event and decided to register and play in this year’s female only event.

The World Series of Poker can’t actually ban men from playing in the event; however, they strongly discourage men from participating. Regardless, a handful of men joined the event, and some even had the audacity to show up in drag, but men in drag did little to intimidate the 1,054 women who played the event. In fact, a man was the second person to be eliminated from the event on day one!

In the end, the final table was full of estrogen with Vanessa Hellebuyck of France taking the bracelet for this year’s event. She collected more than $192K in winnings and became the second ever non-American to win the WSOP Ladies Championship, and the third person from France to ever win a WSOP gold bracelet. Earlier this year, Hellebuyck final tabled three major events at the European Poker Tour with 5th place as her best finish until now.

“I’m in the clouds now,” said Hellebuyck after she won the event. “This is my first World Series of Poker. It means the world to me. I can’t describe it. Cashing in Europe was very exciting for me. But I don’t know what more I can do now, except maybe win another event that is not the Ladies event. That is the next step.”

Also at the Ladies Championship final table was runner-up Sidsel Boesen of Denmark, 3rd place finisher Timmi DeRosa of Los Angeles, California; 4th place finisher Allison Whalen-Lannel of Atlanta, Georgia; 5th place finisher Kami Chisholm of San Francisco, California; 6th place finisher Holly Hodge of Canada; and 7th place finisher La Sengphet of Dallas, Texas.

New 2010 WSOP Poker App for iPhone

June 21, 2010

The 2010 WSOP iPhone App is out for the 2010 WSOP season. Developed by Pokulator LLC and Applicorp, this new and innovative application for the iPhone features WSOP event schedules, structures, and customized results for mobile platforms. You’ll find that the schedule is easily accessible and can be viewed in full or filtered to show events by buy-ins, types of games, or dates.

This new technology eliminates the players’ need for a structure sheet during tournaments and the confusion surrounding when the next affordable event will be held, etc. After the events finish, the app will swiftly and accurately present tournament results and update often with information that WSOP players and spectators alike can use.

The 2010 WSOP iPhone App can be downloaded on all versions of iPhone, iPod Touch, and the recently introduced iPad via the iTunes Store.
This technology will no doubt open doors to more innovative and unique poker-related applications, adding even more poker-useful applications to the growing arsenal of gambling apps out there already, and this isn’t the first time Pokulator LLC and Applicorp have teamed up to offer apps to the poker community. The two companies previously joined forces on the Women of Poker iPhone App, which was also an instant success, and plans for future applications are already in the works.

And while it is not currently possible to actually play online poker via iPhone and related technologies, it might not be an impossible dream. Though poker sites have expressed concern over security related issues with the iPhone platform, there is a way to rig your iPhone to access online poker by accessing the poker game on your PC via your iPhone. While this still seems pretty farfetched, perhaps the ability to gamble via the iPhone for real money is in the future, whether it be near or far.

A Killer Among Us

June 14, 2010

Joran van der Sloot, accused murderer of college student from Peru, 21-year-old Stephany Flores and suspected murderer of Natalee Holloway, who went missing in 2005, has further confessed details of the recent murder of Flores. According to his statement, he and Flores were playing online poker when the murder took place.

While playing poker on van der Sloot’s laptop in his hotel room, he claims that an insulting message appeared on the screen regarding Holloway. The message reportedly mentioned the Holloway case and said, “I’m going to kill you, you little Mongoloid.”

Van der Sloot claims that Flores, a fellow poker player whom he met at the Latin American Poker Tour in Lima, Peru, threw the first blow and he then elbowed her in the face, strangled her for an entire minute, and then suffocated her with his shirt.

What makes this really hit home to the poker community is that this killer had played online poker on at least two online poker rooms, UB.com being one of them. He played there using the name “AngryShark68.” Van der Sloot also competed in live poker events such as the Latin American Poker Tour, though he never made any big wins or cashes.

While the graphic and bloody details of Flores’ murder recently released are chilling and gruesome, the fact that this killer sat at the felt, played cards, and swapped chips with respectable members of the poker community and then murdered a fellow poker player in cold blood is just as disturbing. An “Angry Shark” in more than one sense, van der Sloot’s seemingly calm demeanor about everything including past recollections of the Natalee Holloway case five years ago gives a whole new meaning to the term “poker face,” as he apparently has used his to bluff his way out of more than just a bad hand.
